Dr. Sergott is highly trained and experienced in diagnosing these symptoms and prescribing a course of treatment that will be effective in restoring vision. Common Neuro-ophthalmic Diseases and Their Causes
Neuro-ophthalmic diseases can be caused by traumatic brain injuries and strokes, and are often associated with brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, optic nerve diseases, and other conditions of the central nervous system. Common neuro-ophthalmic diseases include optic neuritis (an inflammation of the optic nerve), ocular myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune disease resulting in muscle weakness in the eyes), and papilledema (a swelling of the optic nerve due to intracranial pressure). Other neuro-ophthalmic diseases include:
- Optic neuropathy (general damage to the optic nerve)
- Blepharospasm (uncontrollable and abnormal contraction of the eyelid)
- Thyroid eye disease
- Paraneoplastic syndromes (symptoms caused by the occurrence of cancer, but not as the result of localized cancer cells)
- Cranial nerve palsies
The treatment of neuro-ophthalmic disease depends on many factors, including its root cause, its severity, and the symptoms it manifests. Dr. Sergott carefully analyzes each individual patient’s case in order to suggest the best course of action.
