Intraocular Lenses (IOLs): ReSTOR®, ReZoom™, Crystalens® - Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.A. – Wilmington, Delaware
An intraocular lens (IOLs) is an artificial lens made of clear silicone, acrylic, or plastic that replaces the natural, unhealthy lens removed from a patient during cataract surgery. IOLs restore, and in most cases improve, vision in patients with cataracts. These implants are typically "permanent," never needing care or replacement. Implants will often reduce a patient's dependence upon glasses or contacrt lenses, even in those who have worn glasses for a lifetime.
In addition to the standard monofocal IOL, there are three types of newer "premium" IOLs: Toric monofocal, multifocal, and accommodating lenses. Standard spherical monofocal lenses restore and correct vision at a single focal length, usually focused for optimum distance vision, requiring the further use of glasses or contact lenses for optimal vision at multiple distances, such as for reading. These correct nearsightedness or farsightedness, but not astigmatism. Toric monofocal lenses (see Acrysof Toric IOL below) correct astigmatism, as well as nearsightedness or farsightedness, further reducing the need for distance glasses in those patients with astigmatism. Multifocal lenses (see Acrysof ReStor below) improve vision at multiple distances, reducing or eliminating the use of glasses or contacts for both near and far tasks. Accommodating, or adaptive lenses (see Crystalens below), make use of the muscles of your eyes to adjust the focal point of the eye so that vision is crisp regardless of the distance. Crystalens®
The only brand of IOL that is flexivble like the natural lens of your eye, Studies show an exceptional success rate for Crystalens® patients. An accommodative IOL, Crystalens® uses the muscles of your eye to shift the image of objects at any distance into sharp focus. Crystalens® not only restores the vision that is lost due to the degenerative effects of cataracts; it can also restore the ability to focus near to far in most patients. This allows the patient to reduce or eliminate the use of glasses or contact lenses, including for reading. In fact, 98 percent of patients reported that their vision had improved to 20/40 or better after surgery.
AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR®
Another multifocal lens option for those who have had cataract surgery, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens improves vision at all distances. The ReSTOR® lens uses apodized diffractive technology to allow focusing at multiple distances. Rings from the outer edge to the center vary in small steps to creaste a smooth transition of focus from near to far. This advanced technology allows the device to accurately and comprehensively restore and improve vision, reducing the need for spectacles at all distances.
AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL
Until AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL, cataract patients with astigmatism had to continue to depend on glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery for sharp visual acuity. Astigmatism is a condition in which the cornea is not spherical, and images are distorted unless corrected with glasses or contact lenses. The AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL replaces the cloudy cataract, correcting both astigmatism as well as nearsightedness or farsightedness, reducing the need for glasses, even if present before cataracts formed.
