Intraocular Lenses (IOLs): ReSTOR®, ReZoom™, Crystalens® - Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.A. – Wilmington, Delaware

An intraocular lens (IOLs) is an artificial lens made of clear silicone, acrylic, or plastic that replaces the natural, unhealthy lens removed from a patient during cataract surgery. The material renders it easy to manipulate, requiring a much smaller incision to be made in the eye. IOLs restore, and in most cases improve, vision in patients with cataracts. Once the lens has been replaced with an artificial implant, there is often no need to replace the implant again.

In addition to the standard monofocal IOL, there are three types of newer "premium" IOLs: Toric monofocal, multifocal, and accommodating lenses. Standard spherical monofocal lenses restore and correct vision at a single distance, requiring the further use of glasses or contact lenses for full correction at multiple distances. These correct nearsightedness or farsightedness, but not astigmatism.  Toric monofocal lenses correct astigmatism, as well as nearsightedness or farsightedness, further reducing the need for distance glasses in those patients with astigmatism.  Multifocal lenses improve vision at multiple distances, reducing or eliminating the use of glasses or contacts for both near and far tasks. Accommodating, or adaptive lenses, make use of the muscles of your eyes to adjust the focal point of the eye so that vision is crisp regardless of the distance. Contact our office in Wilmington, Delaware to see which IOL is right for you.

Crystalens®

The only brand of IOL that is as pliable as the natural lens of your eye, Crystalens® improves the vision of our patients in Wilmington and touts an exceptional success rate among lens implant patients. An accommodative IOL,  Crystalens® uses the muscles of your eye to shift the image of objects at any distance into sharp focus. Crystalens® not only restores the vision that is lost due to the degenerative effects of cataracts; it can also improve vision at all distances for most patients. This allows the patient to reduce or eliminate the use of glasses or contact lenses. In fact, 98 percent of patients reported that their vision had improved to 20/40 or better after surgery.

AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR®

Another multifocal lens option for those who have had cataract surgery, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens improves vision at all distances. The ReSTOR® lens uses apodized diffractive technology to relay visual messages through the eye to the brain. Rings at the edge of the implant transmit images from far away, while the rings in the center of the implant transmit images from up close. The rings in between transmit the images at distances in-between. This advanced technology allows the device to accurately and comprehensively restore and improve vision.

AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL

Until AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL, cataract patients with astigmatism had to continue to depend on glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery for visual acuity. An aspheric lens, the Toric IOL is a 2-in-1 lens, simultaneously replacing the degenerated lens and correcting astigmatism. As a result, vision is sharp and clear after surgery, eliminating the need for corrective glasses or contact lenses to see distances. The Toric IOL is also more stable in the eye than other devices to correct astigmatism, due to smarter design and the use of materials that bind to the tissues of the eye.
