Eye Conditions: Myopia (Nearsightedness), Hyperopia (Farsightedness), and Presbyopia Treatment in Wilmington, Delaware

Eye conditions including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and presbyopia are common, easily treated refractive errors. Refractive errors are often the result of an irregularly shaped cornea. The cornea is located at the front of the eye, covering the pupil and iris. It works in conjunction with the lens to refract light to the retina, an essential part of sight. An irregularly shaped cornea skews how light is focused on the retina, which causes the vision to blur.

Refractive errors are easily treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgeryLASIK, PRK, etc. We have extensive experience correcting the eye conditions of the residents of Wilmington, Delaware. Myopia

Commonly known as nearsightedness, it is the most common of the refractive eye conditions. Instead of focusing light on the retina, the cornea's irregular shape causes light to land at a point just in front of the retina, making objects at a distance an indecipherable blur. Myopia can be mild, moderate, or severe.

Signs of myopia often present themselves in childhood and include squinting to see things at a distance and holding objects close to the face. An inherited condition, it most likely results from an elongated shape of the eye or an irregularly steep curvature of the cornea.

Easily diagnosed in a basic eye exam, myopia is also easily treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery including LASIK, PRK, LASEK, and Epi-LASIK. Contact us to learn more about the right treatment for you.

Hyperopia

Also called farsightedness, those with hyperopia have the opposite problem of those with myopia—objects that are close up appear blurry. This occurs because the cornea's flatter shape causes light to land at a point behind the retina. As with myopia, hyperopia can be mild, moderate, or severe.

Hyperopia also typically appears in childhood and is genetic. Those who are farsighted may not notice anything wrong until their eyes become tired when doing an activity like reading or writing.

A comprehensive eye exam will catch any signs of farsightedness. Treatment includes eyeglasses, contact lenses, and refractive surgery including LASIK, PRK, LASEK, Epi-LASIK, and Conductive Keratoplasty (CK).

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is age-related farsightedness that occurs as the lens of the eye begins to lose flexibility. A natural consequence of the aging process, those with presbyopia notice that the words in the newspaper or that best-selling novel slowly become blurry and difficult to read. To compensate, they may hold their reading material further away or under brighter, more direct light. This eye strain can cause fatigue and headaches.

Presbyopia is diagnosed during an eye exam. Treatments include glasses and contact lenses, refractive surgery including LASIK and CK, and implantable lenses including ReSTOR® and Crystalens®.
